How To Fix Common Issues On Granite Countertops
Granite countertops are treasured for their durability and timeless design, but they aren't damage-proof. Scratches, etching, and stains are three most common complaints when it comes to granite. The following guide can help you avoid damage, or at least provide a solution if damage has already occurred.
Scratches
Avoiding scratches can be relatively simple if you make a point to always use a cutting board. Further, if you store or use any appliances on your counter, then make sure the appliance is equipped with felt footing protectors.
If a scratch does occur, you may be able to buff it out with fine steel wool. Choose #0000 steel wool and lightly rub it over the scratch until it is gone. For deeper scratches, a professional fix may be necessary. In some cases a granite restoration service can buff out a scratch with a power buffer. If this fails, they may be able to completely camouflage it with a stone color enhancer.
Etching
Etching occurs when an acid sits on the stone. Lemons, tomato juice, and wine are the most common culprits. Using a cleaning solution not meant for granite can also lead to etching. It's better to avoid etching completely, because it can be difficult to fix.
You may be able to buff out etching with a granite polishing powder. Sprinkle the powder over the damaged area and then buff the granite with a soft, dampened cloth. If this doesn't work, a professional may be able to buff out the marks with an electric buffer and a polishing pad.
Stains
Red wine, oil, and dark colored foods can all leave stains on granite, particularly if you have lighter countertops. Using cutting boards and being prompt when cleaning up spills helps avoid stains.
If you do have a stain, purchase a granite stain poultice or make your own by combining baking soda and water to form a paste. Spread the poultice over the stain and then cover it with a sheet of plastic wrap to keep it damp over night. In the morning, scrape off the poultice (which hopefully absorbed most of the stain) and wipe clean. You may have to repeat the process a couple of times. If this fails, a professional service may be able to remove the stain with special cleansers.
Many granite problems can also be avoided by having your countertops sealed every few years.
