Simple Cabinet Upgrades
The use of cabinet veneers, updated hardware, and interior accessories can be used to remodel old wooden cabinetry that is within your kitchen. These inexpensive upgrades will provide cabinets with a custom look that will tie into your kitchen's design scheme.
Veneers And Adhesives
Cabinet veneers that are constructed of thin sheets of wood or particle board are designed to adhere directly to the front of each cabinet door. A cabinet veneer will camouflage stains, scratches, and other imperfections that are on the surface of a cabinet door. Veneers come in textured and non-textured formats. This type of covering may be dyed or painted during the manufacturing process.
Some veneer products may contain thin tile sections or other decorative materials. First, remove the hardware from each cabinet. Next, measure the height and width of each cabinet door. Purchase veneer products that are the same dimensions. A veneer may contain an adhesive backing. If not, you can purchase a separate adhesive product and use it to secure each veneer to one of the cabinet doors.
Hardware Upgrades
Old pull knobs or handles that are tarnished can make cabinetry look cheap and dated. Bronze-plated hardware or painted metal knobs and pull handles will add a contemporary vibe to your cabinetry, plus may make the doors more accessible than they originally were.
If the original hardware possessed any functional characteristics that you weren't fond of, invest in hardware designs that are completely different. The new hardware will need to be anchored through the existing holes in each cabinet face. Screws and other attachment pieces should be secured to the interior side of each door.
Interior Accessories
Cabinet dividers, sliding trays, and lighting are accessories that will keep kitchen essentials organized, plus make them easier to retrieve. A home center that features cabinet products may sell some innovative accessories that can easily be installed. Interior accessories may contain brackets or an anchoring system that will need to be installed directly within each cabinet.
Assessing how your cabinets are currently used will help you determine if you will need to purchase accessories for some of the cabinets or all of them. If you do not want to install lighting directly inside each cabinet, you can invest in some 'under cabinet' lighting instead. This type of lighting includes LED products that can be screwed in and strip products that can be adhered to the underside of each cabinet.
